Now is the time to take your heating issues seriously – Controllers

80% of the jobs our engineers attended last year had the controllers set incorrectly or were set to come on at weekends, when no one was in the building.

With energy costs rising at a rate not seen for decades it has never been more important to ensure the right steps are being taken to keep costs as low as possible.

John Rodgers, CEO, gives his top tips to ensure the maximum efficiency for warehouses and factories as winter approaches.

1. Check your controllers to ensure they are set for the correct times.

2. Check the Room Thermostat is set at 15 – 18 degrees in working hours, depending on workplace comfort requirements.

3. Ensure Night Setback / Frost Thermostat is set at 4 degrees to avoid potential frost damage to expensive equipment. By far the biggest inefficiency our engineers see is Night Setback / Frost thermostats being set incorrectly and heating empty spaces outside of working hours.

radiant heater

Radiant Heating Explained

Radiant Heating explained

Radiant heating is becoming a more and more popular option for heating units where heat is only required in specific areas.

Radiant heaters produce rays of energy that will only convert to heat once it hits and is absorbed by the body or object. One of the best examples of this is our own sun and the sunlight it produces. On a cold day, when you stand in the sunshine, you still feel the heat of the sun on your face, but if you move into the shade, you no longer feel the radiant heat it produces.

As opposed to a traditional heater, a radiant heater will not pump heat out into an open space – we are warming the person or object and not the air. This can combat the issue of heat rising above where it is required or the heating of general areas where it would be classified as wasteful. Radiant heating is a great option in certain cases where heat is needed in specific areas, but not necessarily in the whole unit. It is particularly applicable where large doors are in constant operation throughout the day.

boiler business care plans and commercial gas safety certificate

Why has British Gas Stopped Business Care Plans?

Why has British Gas Stopped Business Care Plans?

In early 2022, British Gas stopped offering new Business Care plans to commercial customers, leaving many businesses without cover for their commercial gas boilers and heaters. If your existing Business Care plan is coming to an end or has already expired, Swiftheat are on hand to help. This blog will take you through all you need to know to ensure your commercial and industrial gas appliances are compliant and in full working order.

What is a Business Care plan?

‘Business Care’ is the name British Gas use for their ‘inclusive’ care plan for commercial gas boilers and heaters. This type of plan involves businesses paying a flat monthly fee which covers all associated costs for ongoing maintenance of their gas boilers and heaters, including servicing, parts and call-outs.

Has British Gas cancelled Business Care plans?

Yes, British Gas has stopped providing new Business Care cover plans. Although the company have not issued a statement to confirm this, commercial customers throughout the UK have noticed that they are no longer able to renew their existing or expired plans.

Why did British Gas cancel their Business Care plans?

British Gas isn’t alone in cancelling its care plans for commercial and industrial gas services. In fact, most companies no longer provide equivalent ‘inclusive’ plans. The main reason for this is because of the costs associated with inclusive-style maintenance, particularly with the rapidly rising cost of parts. Put simply, the cost of cover was becoming so expensive that it no longer offered a benefit over ‘pay-as-you-go’ services. Another reason why many businesses stopped offering inclusive service plans is because of the increase in length of manufacturer guarantees. Modern commercial gas boilers and heaters often come with a warranty of 10 or more years, with some even covering parts and call-outs.

What do I need to consider for my commercial gas boiler or heater?

The two things you need to think about when it comes to your business’s gas boiler or heater are its annual service and emergency repairs.

All commercial premises have a duty of care to their employees and premises visitors to ensure all gas appliances have been inspected annually, and where appropriate a CP17 gas safety certificate has been issued and is in force. This satisfies H&S and insurance obligations and is a key measure for any commercial business.

The experienced team at Swiftheat provide a comprehensive service for inspections and CP17 certification for gas appliances in commercial and industrial environments.

If something goes wrong and your appliance is no longer covered by its manufacturer warranty, then the team at Swiftheat carry out emergency commercial, and industrial, boiler and heater repairs as well as ongoing maintenance services, meaning you have the complete package when you have a relationship with Swiftheat.

Based in the North West of England, our Gas Safe registered engineers are on hand to provide a full range of maintenance and repair solutions. Contact on 0161 764 4539 or contact us using this form.

Choosing the Right Heating for your Warehouse

Choosing the Right Heating for your Warehouse

Getting the heating of your warehouse just right is essential for many reasons. It helps to ensure a safe and legal working environment, keeps your employees comfortable and saves you from throwing energy and money down the drain. There are two main ways to achieve the perfect heating set-up for your warehouse, and each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages which we cover in this blog. Once you understand the pros and cons of each system, our helpful Swiftheat experts are on hand to help you make an informed decision and can guide you through the process from installation through to maintenance and repair.

Warm air heaters

Warm air heaters are a popular choice for warehouses in the UK that require heating through the colder months.

How do warm air heaters work?

They work by converting the cool air in the warehouse into warm air by passing it through a heat exchanger that uses a gas flame to generate heat. The hot air is then distributed by the vents in the heater which circulates around the building. Warm air heaters are thermostat controlled, so properly serviced and functioning machines are able to keep the warehouse at a constant temperature without overheating the space and wasting valuable energy and money.

What are the best warm air heaters?

Many brands of warm air heaters are available to warehouses in the UK. These include machines by Reznor, Winterwarm, Blackheat, Powrmatic, Ambirad, Benson, RG (Roberts Gordon), Combat, Space-Ray. While they all perform the same basic job, the performance and affordability of each machine vary and it’s recommended that you use a specialist installer such as Swiftheat to help identify the right warm air heater for your warehouse.

We have covered the benefits and drawbacks of warm air heaters in full detail, but here’s a quick summary.

What are the advantages of warm air heaters?

  •  Provides consistent, regulated heat
  •  Rapid warming
  •  Generally reliable
  •  Easy to adjust

What are the disadvantages of warm air heaters?

  •  Heats spaces that don’t need it e.g above racking
  •  Initial setup costs

Destratification fans with warm air heaters

As hot air rises, warm air heaters, unfortunately, do a great job of heating up the spaces in your warehouse that you don’t need heating as well as the spaces that you do. The best way to counter this is by using a destratification fan.

destratification fan
A destratification fan is a ventilation fan that suspends from the ceiling and recirculates the hot air from the ceiling, pushing it down towards the floor. This minimises heat wastage and greatly improves the efficiency of your heating system which saves your business money and cuts down on energy consumption.

Radiant heating

Radiant heaters are the best alternative to warm air heaters. They are suspended radiant tubes that provide targeted heat to nearby people and objects.

How do radiant heaters work?

Radiant heaters don’t heat the air, they heat surfaces. They work by creating infrared radiation, which is distributed in electromagnetic waves that are intercepted and absorbed by objects, including people, and turned into heat.

What are the advantages of radiant heaters?

  • The targeted form of heating doesn’t heat unnecessary spaces
  • Minimal heat wastage
  • Cost-effective

What are the disadvantages of warm air heaters?

  • Needs direct access to people and objects – high racking can cause ‘shading’
  • Cold spots in areas of the warehouse not covered by radiant heaters

Which type of heating is right for your warehouse?

Warm air heaters and radiant heaters are the two best ways to heat a warehouse. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the best heating solution for every type of warehouse. It depends on a number of factors such as the density of racking, whether there is a loading bay that remains open and lets warm air out, the number of people working in the area, and many more.

The best solution is to speak to a professional who will provide you with tailored advice that takes into account all of the considerations necessary. At Swiftheat, we are specialists in warm air and radiant heating systems and experts in all areas of commercial and industrial heating solutions, from installation to repairs, servicing and maintenance.
